Witt is doing great! He is still off oxygen and in a few weeks they will actually turn some of his ventilator settings down. Dr. Macicek will always want Witt to receive pressure support from the vent but some of the settings can be turned down because Witt’s oxygen saturation is staying 98-100. The vent is probably working too much for him!

There are so many things that God has taught me through Witt’s life…God has the final say in all things, we are all just a dependent on God for life as Witt is, be a “nevertheless” Christian(praise Him no matter what the circumstances) AND ask wholeheartedly for healing but seek the Healer!

I carry the truths with me as we walk forward with my daddy, Witt’s great grandfather, GrandBud. GrandBud has lived with bladder cancer for almost 30 years. The doctors originally removed a section of his bladder and then over the years have had to remove tiny little tumors. Just last week the urologist happened to take a look at GrandBud’s bladder(thank You, Lord!) and found a 4 inch, very fast growing tumor. The urologist removed the tumor but some had grown into the bladder wall. Dr. Dan Lehane(my younger sister’s, Cheryl’s, father-in-law) is an incredible oncologist here and is overseeing all of dad’s treatment. I know that God chose Cheryl and Michael for each other and Dan for our family! GrandBud will begin a 6 week regimen of chemo. Hopefully, that will actually take care of the remaining cancer. The urologist will look again in 6 weeks to determine if surgery is required. Daddy will turn 81 this month and just had complete shoulder replacement last fall. Please, Lord, no more surgery!

God has reminded me that just as in Witt’s life, He is in control of GrandBud’s life. I find infinite peace and rest in that truth…not because of the possible outcomes but because of Who is in charge of the outcomes! I want to praise my God Who is Worthy regardless of my circumstances (nevertheless!) just as that wonderful family did at Texas Children’s even as their precious boy passed from this life to life face to face with Christ. I am wholeheartedly asking God to heal my daddy’s bladder, to receive infinite glory for His healing hand but I am wholeheartedly seeking the Healer. God has called me to a fast of sorts for the next 6 weeks, along with other family and friends, as I humbly “seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually.”(1 Chron 16:11)!! Please pray for us during this time and I pray that you see God’s face more clearly too!

Dr. Macicek had nothing but good news today! Witt hadn't had an echocardiogram in almost 2 years. The one today showed that Witt's heart isn't any worse and actually a tiny bit better in some ways! He said that clinically Witt looks a lot better. Witt is only on four medications which is amazing. Dr. Macicek said to try weaning Witt off of one of his two doses of diuretic and even possibly turn some of his vent settings down slightly. Melanie will try this in a few weeks. Tomorrow Witt has his 6 month checkup with Dr. Ruiz, the pulmonologist. Right now I am shouting "How Great is Our God, He is Mighty to Save!"

Witt has his first echocardiogram in almost 2 years tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. We will get the results and see Dr. Macicek also! This will be done without sedation. Please join me in praying that Witt stays relaxed and doesn't wiggle around too much. I am asking Christ to just be hugging on Witt and keeping him still!! Witt's numbers(heart rate, oxygen saturation, etc.) are all good and unchanged so we don't anticipate any changes in his heart condition. Whenever I ponder the things of Witt I just keep hearing Witt's anthem..."Mighty To Save"! I am asking God to continue to show how Mighty He is to a world that desperately needs Him through Witt!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AUSTAN! Yesterday was Austan's 30th birthday. Witt and family helped him celebrate with a hunting themed birthday party!

God continues to amaze and bless us! Witt has been off oxygen for several days now! He is, of course, still on the ventilator but that may even need to be turned down because even without the added oxygen Witt is still satting at 98-100. This could mean that the vent is giving more support than Witt needs!! Witt is sitting up real well now and just needs to learn to not throw himself back. He absolutely has the strength to sit up. Witt's therapist, Robin, also said that he is putting some weight on his legs and arms! When I said that Witt continues to improve even if its tiny steps Robin said, "Karen, these are not tiny improvements. They are big!" Another area of improvement is his making sounds! Witt has found his voice and loves to use it!

Yesterday, I listened to a sermon by John Piper entitled "Why Was This Child Born This Way?" from 5/25/11(2 more messages 6/811, 6/811). This is a great message that sheds God's light on Witt and all special needs kids. A couple of days ago Melanie emailed me this link(http://randycourtneytripproth.blogspot.com/2012/01/strongest-boy-ill-ever-know.html?spref=fb)to the blog of very special boy named Tripp. Please take the time to visit this blog and pray for Tripp and his family. I can't even imagine what his life must be like but I can more than imagine what grace and strength that our God is supplying to endure and be glorified through it all! It seems that Tripp's suffering may soon end. I am praying with each breath of Tripp(and Witt!) that God is infinitely glorified. I am praying the same for my life, for my breaths. God has numbered them...let them count for Him!!!

A VERY MERRY, BLESSED CHRISTMAS!!!

The month of December has been full of joy and blessings for us!!! It seems the greatest gifts have involved wheels!!! First, THE LUPHERS GOT THEIR VAN!!!! Melanie fondly calls it "The Beast"!!! It is beautiful and in Melanie's words, "It has literally changed our lives!"

It has impacted all our lives. The entire family got to ride together on a road trip to see the McCords in New Braunfels! Before the van, only Melanie, Austan and Witt could ride together in one vehicle because of Witt's equipment. And Melanie had to ride in the backseat to be by Witt. Now in the van, Mel can ride up front and quickly get to Witt if needed!!

Witt also received his new wheels, a new larger kid cart!! He has had the first one for almost 2 years and has grown quite a bit!! I will always have great memories of his first set of wheels...the ones that Melanie and Austan used to wheel Witt out of the hospital almost 2 years ago!! He has only been back once for a stomach virus and that was a 18 months ago!!!

Last Sunday our pastor, Curtis Jones(at Bayou City Fellowship!) spoke about the favor of God. He pointed out that Christ was the favor of God given to Mary and that with favor comes responsibility. I have always known that Witt is more than a blessing but now I believe that Witt is the very favor of God!! And yes, with Witt there is much responsibility but with God's favor comes God's strength to accomplish it! This Christmas day I thank my God for His favor poured out on Mary, for His favor poured out on Melanie and Austan...thank You for Christ, thank You for Witt!!!

AND, please join me in praying for the families spending this Christmas in a hospital. We remember what that is like. Pray that Christ presents Himself to them as the One True Gift!!!!

I can hardly comprehend that Witt is 3 years old today! All I can think is GLORY!!! God has made it clear to me over and over that He is no less in control of all of our lives than He is of Witt's life. Its just that He used Witt's life to take so many of my blinders off! When I look at Witt I simply see God's hand, I see God's glory. I wish that for all our lives! Join me once again in shouting to the world:

Blessing after blessing continue to flow! Bayou City Fellowship has welcomed us with open arms. Witt has been to church several times and a church picnic. Sunday I was able to share again with a fellow member how this church is a direct answer to my year long prayer for a solution to Witt, Melanie and Austan getting to go to church. Undoubtedly, it is and will be used to answer many prayers as Curtis leads the congregation to exalt the name of Christ in the city and beyond!

FOUR GENERATIONS AT BCF!

At church this past Sunday, Beth Moore asked me about Witt, his story. I explained the medical side and shared a small bit about what a miracle and blessing he is. She asked about Melanie and Austan and commented that they seem to be doing well. I said that I believe they are doing well! I said that after witnessing God with them in this situation that I am not worried about anything this world has to throw at them...God is Able! The other day I was listening to a podcast about God getting you through your desert times in life. It made me ponder the Luphers and their desert. It is truly amazing that God Himself is still there helping us in the desert times of our lives but it is even more mind boggling to me to see that God can flat get the sand out of your eyes and turn your desert into the Promise Land. The beginning of Witt's life seemed like a horrible desert time and yet that same life is full of one blessing after another. God didn't simply carry the Luphers through their desert he changed it into a beautiful oasis. He is Able!!!!

WITT'S FIRST WEDDING!!!!

Melanie, Witt, Annalee, Adelaide, Graham and I loaded up the Tahoe and drove to Wheeler, TX for Witt's first wedding! It was Lisa Scott's wedding. She is one of my best friend's(Carol Scott) daughter who grew up with Melanie and Evan. The wonderful time began with a hayride/barbecue followed the next day with the rehearsal dinner. We have been in an extreme drought but it rained all 4 days we were there. It was hard to complain but we did ask God to part the rain for a brief time for the outdoor ceremony. Witt's first wedding was a wonderful blessed event!!

God stopped the rain the day of the wedding and brought cooler weather!

WITT ENT PROCEDURE TODAY

Everything is finished with Witt's procedure this morning. It went well with the ENT (tubes and scope) but the eye doctor wasn't able to find the tear duct. It may be very tiny or may not have one at all. Witt will go to a different specialist in a few months. Hopefully he will still get to go home today but his oxygen saturation is staying a little lower than where it normally is, so they will continue to watch him. Thanks you for all your prayers.

PROCEDURE TOMORROW MORNING!

Witt is having a couple of procedures tomorrow morning. He has to be at the Texas Children's Clinic at 6:00am. Somewhere around 7am he will have tubes put in his ears, a tear duct unclogged and the ENT will take a look with a scope at the trach area. Our prayer is that this is a simple one hour process and Witt will get to go home tomorrow. A cardiac anesthesiologist will be used and if there are any concerns at all Witt will be kept over night. I am praying that without a doubt God is control and that His presence is felt by believers and nonbelievers alike...all to His infinite glory!!

Today Witt, Mel and Austan went to the second worship service of Bayou City Fellowship! Curtis' sermon was based on Peter and walking on the water to Christ. Curtis gave this definition of overcoming: "Keep moving forward with faith, hope and joy in tact." He also said that even if you fail, maybe because of doubt like Peter, at least like Peter you should fail towards Christ. I couldn't help but think of Melanie and Austan and their journey with Witt. How amazing is our Lord that He empowered Mel and Austan to overcome...to continue to walk on this path filled with faith, hope and joy. I remember marveling at how much laughter there was even in the PICU waiting room! I also couldn't help but think of the family that having just lost their child invited me to be a part of their prayer that ended with them joyfully proclaiming over and over again: "Nevertheless, we will praise You, nevertheless we will praise You!!!" They undoubtedly overcame.

WITT AT WORSHIP

HE IS ABLE...AND PRACTICAL!!!!

Over a year ago I started asking God for a solution to the problem of the Melanie, Austan and Witt being able to go to church. I just didn't expect Him to create a new church! Wow, He is Able and Practical!!! For several years Mel and Austan have been members of a very large church. It just didn't seem right to take Witt to the service of several thousand people. I kept thinking I could stay with Witt every other Sunday so at least Mel and Austan could attend worship. God had a much greater plan...more than I could imagine. He created a whole new church. Obviously, there are many, many God glorifying reason why Bayou City Fellowship has been started but one of those was so that the entire Lupher family could worship together!! Curtis, the pastor was very welcoming along with the founding team of about 50 people. This Sunday was the very first official service of BCF and Witt. If that wasn't mind boggling enough for me, God put the "icing on the cake". The first worship song was "Mighty to Save"...Witt's theme song from birth!!

Witt has had several checkups. The first was with Dr. Ruiz, the pulmonologist. There is no plan right now to make major adjustments to the ventilator but he wants Mel to try weaning Witt off the oxygen! Witt's latest checkup was with Dr. Chumitazi, the gastroenterologist. He wants to try to wean Witt off two of his medicines and feels like there is no more need to see Witt!! Definitely all steps in the right direction. Truly, He is Mighty to Save!

This Monday, the 19th, Witt is having a couple of procedures down. He is having tubes put in both ears and his tear duct unclogged. They are suppose to be at Texas Children's at 6am. Hopefully this is a simple day procedure. Witt will have a cardiac anesthesiologist. The plan is for Witt to go home that day. I am praying that that is God's plan. Dr. Ruiz did tell Mel to speak up if she did not think Witt was 100%...then we all laughed!! God has blessed Melanie with a bold spirit that is never afraid to speak up where Witt is concerned. Just the type of mom Witt needs. What an Able, Practical God!!!

HE'S GETTING TALL!!!

This has been a fun, hot but healthy uneventful summer for Witt!!! He's been on trips to San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth with Melanie and Austan. With this extreme heat and the fact that Witt is a growing boy, it's hard to be patient waiting on the converted van. The daily highs are in the 100's and Witt and his equipment aren't getting any lighter! Unfortunately, the wait is still 2-3 months since the van hasn't even been made yet. It is ordered but the whole process including conversion takes a while. You would think by now I would have learned to wait and even bask in God's perfect timing! Please Lord, have Your way...it's always a better way than mine!!!

Witt does have several doctor's appointments this fall. Most notably is September 19. Witt will have tubes put in his ears, the doctor will look at his trach and wind pipe with a scope and a tear duct will be opened. These are normally not major procedures but Witt will need to be at the hospital with a cardiac anesthesiologist. Generally this is not an overnight stay.

This morning as I was thanking God for all the blessing of having Witt, He brought to mind a blessing that I don't normally think of. God reminded me of the incredible seeds He sowed through the valleys, some deep almost seemingly bottomless valleys. Yet, it is in those valleys that the ground is the most fertile...that the seeds yield the greatest harvest. Psalm 126:5 says:

"Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy." Throughout Witt's many, long hospital stays God was always always faithful to fill the seed bags with things like His truths, His promises and completely discard the seeds of anger or bitterness. Over and over He faithfully planted His seeds of truth deep into the fertile valley and watered them with our tears. Truly, truly joy always followed!! What a great harvest, what a tremendous blessing, what an Awesome God!!!

Witt had a great check up today! We had to wait a bit to see the doctor but if anybody is worth waiting for it's Dr. Macicek!!! He was Witt's first and has been Witt's main cardiologist. Dr. Macicek said Witt's X-rays and latest labs look good. He doesn't want to see Witt for another 6 months. They will schedule an echo cardiogram for that visit just because its been some time since Witt has had one. Just to show off for Dr. Macicek, Witt reached out and "shook" his hand! Dr. Macicek has a new nurse with many question about Witt and his history. I love the opportunity to talk about God and what He has done in Witt's life!!! She asked me how Melanie and Austan lived it...how they didn't freak out. I said that God is always equal to(and greater than!) the task at hand!! She said how do they not worry and I said the answer to all her questions is God. He is the Answer!!!

AND...Elle is out of her surgery and doing well! Dr. Morales said it all went great. The plan is to extubate her at 8pm tonight. Right now she is in cardiac ICU but will very soon will be moved to the regular floor!

He's a growing boy!!!

Today Witt has his first cardiology check up in months! He will be seeing one of our favorite doctors, Dr. Macicek. We don't anticipate that there will be any big changes because all of Witt's "numbers" are still good! We still do however ask for your prayers and as always my greatest desire is for God to be glorified!!!

ALSO....please be praying for Witt's cousin, Elle!! She is right now in the middle of another open heart surgery to make repairs!!!

GROWING, GROWING GROWING!

SITTING UP!

Witt's life continues to be one of the greatest examples of God and His purposes! For those who might be visiting Witt's blog for the first time let me tell you a bit about Witt! He is a very rare trisomy 1 child...I started to say "baby" but he's 2 1/2!!! He actually has a partial addition and deletion on the number 1 chromosome. Texas Children's genetics came up with 30 known cases in the world. The nurses in the PICU were googling it! Before Witt was born Melanie and Austan were told that several things were wrong with Witt. They opted to not undergo anymore testing realizing even then that Witt's life was in God's hands and He most certainly has the final say over all including medical tests. Witt was not expected to live but a handful of days. The chromosome issue has caused abnormalities most notably with his heart and brain. Witt has had 2 open heart surgeries to try to repair the mitral valve but there is no more that can be done. Throughout the first 2 years of his life and months upon months in the hospital Mel and Austan were told several times that this could be the end. They have learned to listen to the doctors and certainly appreciate their knowledge and expertise but also cling to the truth that God has the final say in all things! Witt has required extra oxygen since he was a couple of months old. A little over a year ago it was decided that Witt needed to have a trach put in and go on a ventilator. He breathes on his own but the ventilator helps really expand his lungs which were staying full of fluid mainly from the heart issues! Witt is now a robust 33 pounds thanks to his feeding tube which was necessary because basically everything he swallowed was going directly into his lungs. Witt is a miracle! Not that most of us aren't miracles but with Witt there is no denying God's work!!! It has been almost a year since he has been in the hospital!!!! He has actually had several colds and ear infections but has been able to stay home. I believe Witt has confounded and surprised all the doctors especially Dr. Ruiz(pulmonary specialist) and Dr. Macicek(cardiologist). Dr. Ruiz has even turned down some of Witt's settings on the ventilator and Witt is now only on 1/4 a liter of oxygen. What may blow me away the most is how God is so glorified and magnified by Witt's life! This has been my prayer all along...that if Mel and Austan were going to have to walk this walk and their son was going to have these very special needs then let's at least ask God to bring Himself infinite glory!! I hope to one day point people to God in the same way that Witt's life always has!!! Witt's(and Mel's and Austan's) life has not always been easy but God has always been Faithful. He has been faithful to make up with peace and joy where ease has been lacking...Glory!!

Now for some more current news! The great thing is that Witt has had very few doctors appointments. As I mentioned, a couple of weeks ago at his lung check up, Dr. Ruiz turned one setting down on the ventilator. He made no promises but said we might as well keep turning it down slowly! He said that you never know...Witt has already surprised us all! Over the past week Witt has been fighting a pretty nasty head cold but is slowly getting better. He has no doctor's appointments for the month of June! AND with some very kind donations and saving money on their own, Melanie and Austan now have a down payment for a special needs van!! They are going looking this weekend. Its getting harder and harder to lift Witt into his car seat while managing his ventilator and oxygen. With a specially equipped van, Witt and his equipment can simply be wheeled up and "lifted" in! This will have a wonderful impact on the Lupher's lives and I pray it will give them a chance to touch more lives through Witt as they become even more mobile!!!!

Melanie, I know that if Witt could say the words, he would most definitely say Happy Mother's Day to the best mom! I know because I see it in his eyes and his smile when you walk in the room! Today at church Gregg talked about a mom's sacrificial love. I know of no better earthly example than the kind of mom God has called you to be...the kind of mom God has empowered you to be...the kind of mom God has blessed you to be!!! AND I know how much Witt loves you!!!!

This song is one of Melanie’s favorite. It makes me think of Good Friday and Easter all in one. Good Friday must have seemed horrible without knowing that 3 days later Christ would rise from the dead and there would be an Easter day. Christ being crucified was certainly not what the disciples were praying for but He does “love us way too much to give us lesser things”! Friday was “good” because Easter came. What’s hard is the in between days, the days between a good Friday and an Easter day…days that can be long and excruciating. Melanie has lived through many “Good Friday” days with Witt but in God’s infinite grace there has always been a glorious “Easter day’!!! We have prayed for healing, for His mighty hand to ease our suffering and we have always without fail received blessings…blessings through raindrops, healing through tears, unending mercies in disguise. Because of “Good Fridays” I can proclaim blessed “Easters”! Today I am praying for those who are right now living out a “Friday” that in no way seems good and for those who are in the in between days waiting on “Easter”. What I do know is that Easter does come because Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!!!

Witt and some of the crew are en route to Colorado!

They got off to a bright and early start this morning,

before it was even bright outside.

The first stop of the day was a good one.

Folding tables make great changing tables,

at pit stops.

Everyone took a lunch break in Witchita Falls.

The trip plans include traveling to Amarillo tonight

and Winter Park tomorrow!

Witt has been very busy!!! He spent 11 days at Warrenton

for the Zapp Hall Antique Show! This was Witt's second show

in a row to share with us and it was wonderful. He was not

feeling great at last fall's show and even had to be taken

into Houston to see the pediatrician. This show was uneventful

as far as Witt was concerned but incredibly busy especially at the cafe!!!

I have a couple of prayer requests but first join me in thanking the Lord for Witt's health! Except for the couple of weeks this summer because of a stomach virus, it has been a year since Witt has been in the hospital!!!! We still run into friends from the hospital when Witt goes to his doctor's appointments but I have almost forgotten what it's like to sleep in a recliner! The first prayer request I have is for Witt to sleep through the night. I am writing this post at 3:00am because Witt has been waking up in the middle of the night for several nights in a row and its not an uncommon occurrence. I came over to sit with Witt so Melanie and Austan could get some sleep. In 8 days Melanie and Austan are taking their first vacation with Witt! We are going to Winter Park for Easter!! It's closing weekend at the ski area but a much warmer and healthier time than at Christmas. All of Witt's doctors have more than approved of the trip...they are pleased that Mel and Austan are taking him. This week I am having a special adapter put in my car so that we can travel with the humidifier attached to Witt's ventilator. Mel has worked out all the details of medication and supplies. The oxygen supply company even has an office in Denver and a top lung specialist that used to be at Texas Children's is now at a hospital in Denver! Please join me in praying for safety in travel. It should be a 2 day trip with an over night stay in Amarillo...hope the Gayle and Bobby Bed and Breakfast is open!!! The longest trip the Luphers have taken before this was a 5 hour trip so the timing will be up to Witt. He normally enjoys being in the car! We will return to Texas the week after Easter. I can't think of any better way to celebrate Christ and His complete victory over the things of this world than traveling with Witt, His miracle!!!

Witt is doing great! We are getting ready to spend the week in Warrenton for the antique show. So today we had to make sure he looks his best and took him to get a haircut.

WITT'S FIRST TRIP TO THE ZOO!

We and I have been trying to take Witt to the zoo for weeks and we finally made it happen. We went in the middle of the week in the afternoon. When we got there it was a little more crowded then we thought it would be. My mom went to buy the tickets and they were free. Free! On all the days we have been trying to go to the zoo we happen to go on free zoo day. Normally being free would be a good thing but we like to avoid big crowds with Witt. It ended up working out just fine once we got in and the crowds went all different directions. Of course Mr. Witt fell asleep right after we got there. We had tons of fun and it was one of those rare prefect days in Houston. Here are some pics from our day!

A note from Karen: Lest anyone think God is not still using Witt in my life to teach me many things, let me tell you what happened before we actually got into the zoo!! Because everyone was free at the zoo the parking lot was a little crazy. We do have a handicap card to park but all the handicap spaces were full up front. We drove around and finally were waiting(turn signal on) for a car to back out of a regular spot. We had to wait a couple of minutes. The way it worked out a car drove up and turned in before I could pull in!!! It wouldn't have even been so bad except that I had Witt and Melanie with me. I politely told the man that I had been waiting several minutes for the space...that all the handicap spaces were full and I had my special needs grandbaby with me. His reply was, "Life is tough!" Oh, my goodness!!!! I said, "Seriously, that is your response. I have been waiting on this space. All the handicap spaces are full." He once again said, "Yeah, life is tough." I actually sort of chuckled to my self thinking how "funny" it was that this man and his wife were telling me and my daughter with Witt in the car that "life is tough". I did say, "No, sir...this isn't tough. Life in a wheelchair...that gets a little tough." There was no response and they walked away leaving their car in the parking spot! Now, let me tell you how God had prepared me for this so that my joy would not be stolen and although I was shocked and amazed I was never angry! I have been listening to Nancy Leigh DeMoss' podcasts. It just so happened that morning when I was getting ready for the zoo her podcast was about controlling the tongue and our joy!!! She quoted from Proverbs 15:22...

A man has joy in an apt answer, and how

delightful is a timely word!

Nancy pointed out that it is in the way we answer that we have our joy. How great is our God to prepare us not just for the big things in life but for the little day to day things that can so easily steal our joy! By God's grace(and we all know its by His grace because its one thing to be rude to me but an entirely other thing when it involves Melanie and Witt!!) I answered politely and without a touch of anger. We did find more handicap spots at the very back of the parking lot. I can use all the exercise I can get!!! The day was a wonderful day with my daughter, daughter-in-law and the grandkids. In a weird kind of way it was more joy filled because of the way it started. Thank You, Lord for giving me the apt answer and filling me with Your joy. Thank You, Lord that You continue to use Witt for Your glory!!!!!

THE STANDER!

Witt's stander has arrived! It absolutely brings me to tears(of joy!) to see him in it. It also makes me realize how much Witt has grown...how tall he is!!!! I thank God for this technology that allows so many kids to stand tall who otherwise might never. This will really help Witt to strengthen his legs and could even help with his digestion. AND Witt likes it!!!

Witt has actually had a very busy few weeks!!! Melanie has gotten a lot of

use out of Witt's hat's. We've actually had some pretty cold weather here

in Texas...at least cold for us!!

Witt helped Melanie and Austan celebrate their 5th year wedding

anniversary on the river in San Antonio!

Witt went with Melanie for a lunch date!

Witt really likes avocado!

Witt has also had several doctor's appointments. He continues to have some

fluid in his ear which sometimes has been infected. However, there is usually still

a smile on his face! Witt had an appointment with an eye specialist

who said that Witt's optical nerve is small but its still within the normal range.

The size of the optical nerve will actually never change now which is good news!

She said that Witt's eyes work just fine so Witt's ability to see or not is a function

of his brain. It's hard to tell exactly what Witt does process but one thing I

know for sure is that when Melanie walks in the door he always looks at

her and has the biggest grin!! Undoubtedly he does see and most the time he does

follow with his beautiful blue eyes! Maybe the best news came from Dr. Macicek.

First, Dr. Macicek will most likely remain at Texas Children's!!! He will very soon be an attending and no longer a fellow. Dr. Macicek said that Witt's heart is maintaining

and Witt's liver is actually smaller. AND all the specialists don't want to see Witt again

for at least 6 months....Hallelujah!!!! Except for the 2 weeks this summer when

Witt had an intestinal virus, he is closing in on being home for almost a year!!!

Almost unbelievable...BELIEVABLE MIGHTY GOD!!!!!

Right now Witt is running a low grade fever(100.2)and Mel just put a call into the pediatrician. Hopefully its just a normal 2 year old thing!!!

Witt is staying warm!!!

Witt has been doing great! There have been no issues since our ER visit on new years. We have been very busy with doctor appointments for the new year. Witt went to my favorite lung doc at TCH, Dr. Ruiz and he said Witt looked like he was doing great. We talked a lot about the ventilator and turning his support down which we ended up doing. They took Witt's breath rate, number of breaths the machine gives him from 24 to 22. Nothing big but it is a start. Although there are no plans to take him off the ventilator any time soon. It has almost been a year since Austan and I decided to have the trach surgery done for Witt. He as had some serious surgeries but putting his trach in was the hardest one for me. I did not want to do it at all. When Witt came out of surgery and even a few days later he seemed so miserable. Austan and I for the first time were really second guessing our decision to have it done. Now almost a year later of having all the extra equipment in tow, which has not always been easy, Austan and I know we did the right thing. The trach and the ventilator as given us the most normal life we have had since Witt was born. Mr. Witt has also been dealing with some ear infections. Our last visit with his pediatrician he thought Witt's ears looked good but we have an appointment with the ENT on Monday. Witt also has an appointment with the eye doctor in a couple of weeks and I have to say I am the most nervous about this. They have to dilate his eyes and look in them. No kid likes to have their eyes held open. I can already feel my over protective side bubbling up just thinking about this appointment. If you would please pray that it won't be as bad as I'm thinking and if it is that I will remember they are not trying to hurt him. Witt is doing really well in therapy. He got this new vest called a spio. It looks like a little wet suit and it provides extra trunk support. He is very close to sitting up on his own when he is wearing his new vest. We are also waiting for his new stander and bath seat to be delivered. I'm very excited about those. Since Witt is doing so well we don't have as many day to day things to update the blog with. We will always try to put pics and keep everyone updated on the good and fun things Witt is doing.

HOME AND DOING WELL!

Jim and I just landed back in Houston. We headed straight to Mel's and Austan's and more importantly Witt's!!! He is doing quite well. His blood gas test done in the ER showed all his levels are good. We will never know how long Witt's tube was disconnected but whats most important is that he is doing good and there appears to be no long term effects. I can't imagine what last night must have been like for Melanie and Austan...to wake up to Witt's alarms going off, a tube disconnected from the ventilator and Witt pale and very limp. Austan said that by the time the paramedics got there Witt had finally moved a couple of fingers but that was it. Austan also told me that he had to drive his car while Mel went with Witt in the ambulance and that he wasn't sure what he would face when he got to the hospital. What Austan didn't know was that during the ambulance ride, Witt took the pacifier out of his mouth and smiled at the paramedic! Witt has bounced back quickly and my prayer is that Melanie and Austan are able to do so also. They were blaming themselves for not hearing the alarms sooner. Tonight Jim and I are spending the night with them. Hopefully they will get some much needed sleep!

We have talked to Melanie and Witt is undergoing some tests. As they are waiting, Witt has been playing with his grandfather Mark's face so he seems to be feeling okay. Karen and I are in Colorado so you can imagine have difficult this is on all involved. Thank you for your continued prayers.

Witt is home for Christmas and Santa Claus found him!!! I can’t fully explain the joy and gratitude that I have for Witt being home. At the same time I am reminded of the priceless lessons that God taught me the last two Christmases. First, Christmas really is about Christ and that can be celebrated anywhere…even in a hospital. Maybe more importantly God showed me that through Him you can have joy no matter what your circumstances. I can worship Him in all my circumstances because of who He is and not where I am. I can’t imagine what it must have been like on that first Christmas, when Christ was born but I can tell you that on this first Christmas home for Witt I find myself simply bowed down and thanking God that under His sovereignty Witt’s third Christmas is spent out of the hospital. Today I celebrate the birth of Christ and this year that celebration is taking place at home!!

STILL HOME!!

Witt has a little virus. Monday, Melanie took him to the pediatrician for his RSV shot. The timing was perfect because Melanie also asked them to check Witt's ears. Sure enough Witt had an ear infection in both ears! He is taking antibiotic and Mel started the oral steroids for his lungs. Witt actually seems to be feeling okay! Not only has Witt always been in the hospital for Christmas but he's also never been home for the week leading up to it. There is some great rejoicing going on here!!!! Please join me in praying for all the kids and families who are spending this Christmas at Texas Children's Hospital. We know what that is like!!!

As you can see Melanie has been busy decorating for Christmas. The tree is up and the stockings are hung...all with great care!!!

Witt seems to be better today! His cough is not as bad and Mel has inhaled antibiotics and steroids to give Witt if he needs them. The entire family is feeling better! Dr. Tapia also gave Mel a cream to treat the skin under Witt's eye. The eye has been watering quite a bit. Witt in turn rubs it so the skin is pretty irritated under the eye. That too is better today!!!

Yesterday, a dear friend of my mom's said that Mel deserves a crown. She said that if she could make a crown she would and give it to Mel. Immediately God said to me, "Mel has her crown. Witt is her crown!" Hallelujah...what a crown Witt is!!!!

FOREVER I'LL STAND!

Witt has been growing and getting lots of physical and occupational therapy.

Now he has braces to help him learn to stand!The process

started with casts being made of both feet up to the knees. Since it was a

very bright day out when we went to the appointment Witt wore his baseball cap!

Here is the final product and actually it was a pretty easy process!

The woman who did the casting was wonderful. She has been doing this for quite a few years.

One trick of the trade is to make a cast with a rubber tube inside to protect the

legs. She slits the casts to remove them where the rubber tubing is.

A couple of weeks later and his braces were ready!

With help from the therapist Witt was standing!! The doctor has also ordered a "stander"

which along with the braces will help Witt to put more weight on his legs.

When Melanie texted "Witt's standing!!!!!" I just jumped to my feet and said Hallelujah!!

The song "Shout To The Lord" immediately came to my mind!

SO FAR HIS NUMBERS ARE STAYING OKAY ALTHOUGH HIS HEART RATE DOES GO UP WITH THE FEVER. PLEASE PRAY FOR MEL AND AUSTAN TOO! THEY BOTH ARE FIGHTING HEAD COLDS. DR. TAPIA(PEDIATRICIAN) WANTS TO SEE WITT AT 8AM. WITT MANAGED TO GET THROUGH A HEAD COLD BACK IN SEPTEMBER WITHOUT HAVING TO BE HOSPITALIZED. OUR FERVENT PRAYER NOW (ESPECIALLY AT CHRISTMAS TIME) IS THAT WITT IS ABLE TO FIGHT THIS OFF AND STAY OUT OF HOSPITAL!!!

THANKSGIVING!!!!

I guess it is completely fitting that the only holiday that Witt has never been in the hospital for is Thanksgiving! There has been no other life that God has used like Witt’s to make me bow in thankfulness. Maybe its because in the first few hours of Witt’s life we were told he would only be with us a few days. God not only taught me to be thankful for each day He has given me with Witt but to simply be thankful for each day. Somehow He even filled me with thankfulness at the end of some very very difficult days in the hospital. Someone might look at Witt’s life...what he has been through and even the day to day circumstances and think that surely there is anger, resentment and bitterness. I tell you the truth, Witt’s life exudes peace, joy and thankfulness all to the glory of our God!!!

Today, I shout to Lord, “Thank You! Thank You, Lord that You are Lord, that You are Sovereign and thank You for another day with Witt! Thank You for another day to share Witt, to share Witt’s story, to share Your story!!!”

Witt continues to grow and learn...he is learning to clap!!!

The last couple of weeks have been filled with celebration, fun and food!!! First, we celebrated Witt's 2nd birthday!!!!

The house was incredibly decorated and the treats

PERFECT TWO!

two years ago, we spent the day in a hospital waiting room. we were hoping and fervently praying while mel was laboring. i wanted to believe the uncertain things on ultrasounds were a fluke. i wanted desperately for austan to come announce a perfect baby had arrived.

two years ago, at 6:15pm witt harris lupher made his entrance into this world. austan came into the waiting room to proudly announce, "it's a boy!" followed immediately by the fact they had immediately taken him for help breathing.

later that night, everyone gathered as a specialist tried to explain details. details about some less than perfect conditions. then witt was brought back into the room for everyone to meet him for the first time. what i remember most about that moment was seeing the display of perfect love as mel reached out her hand to hold her son's hand for the first time.

over the course of two years, witt (and austan and mel) have given me a whole new definition of perfect. there have been so many details that are less than perfect on paper. so many tears and hard days. i don't mean perfect in the sense of painless. instead what i'm saying is that witt is absolutely perfect because he is God's creation. his story is filled with miracles and trusting in God's perfect plans. and for two amazing years witt's life has touched us in ways that are unexplainable.

witt is perfect. did you know perfect means a) pure b) excellent and delightful in all respects and c)completely suited for a particular purpose? i can't think of any more perfect definitions for my perfect nephew.

happy birthday witt! we love you beyond measure. we give thanks for you everyday and are overjoyed to celebrate you today!

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2008

MEL'S APPT

Unfortunately, at today's appointment we did not get the news we had wanted. The space in the brain has grown from 10 to 13. This could indicate some form of brain damage which we won't know till the baby is born. I believe that God is calling us to walk the walk. I ask that you pray for Mel and all our family that we look past any results and look to the very face of God. I am still wholeheartedly petitioning God to miraculously heal this baby but we have to have our faith in Him regardless of situations. Honestly, I don't think I have ever been called to walk in this kind of faith and trust. Please pray that God would fill us with immeasurable trust in Him...He is Trustworthy! Whatever God chooses to do in this situation we will praise Him and seek to give Him glory! Mel has her OB appointment this Wednesday. Once again Melanie was hit hard but she has caught her breath and knows that God is in control. She is an incredible testimony to me. She is not pretending that everything is going to be just fine but she manages to keep seeking God and His strength. Please continue to pray for her. She still laughs! I would ask you to pray for me also...that God will strengthen me as we walk through this. "Thank you" falls so short of what I mean but I sincerely thank you all!!!!

God has Faithfully carried us through Witt's first 2 years. God made it almost impossible for us to not see His face with each step. God has healed Witt in so many ways. I have lost count the number of times we were told that Witt was dying. Each time we had doubts God filled us with more than enough trust in Him. God is, has been and will be our Strength!!

Now speaking personally, I want to share just a few of the many things our Faithful Father has taught me through Witt's first 2 years!

I have learned that there is no end to the depth that my God will reach down to pick me up and there is no end to the heights that His love takes me. I have known and wholeheartedly believed that my God is Sovereign but I have learned to trust that sovereignty. Not just knowing but trusting in His sovereignty ushers in a peace that is beyond all human understanding. I have also learned that excruciating pain can exist in the midst of total peace and somehow this peace makes the pain bearable. I have known that He is sovereign and I have learned to trust that Witt will breathe every breath that God has deemed. I have learned to trust that He has the final say in all things. I have known that all things were created by and for Christ and I have learned that undoubtedly, undoubtedly, undoubtedly Witt was created by Christ and for Christ. Witt is created in His image and for His glory. I don’t know of another human being in which the fullness of Christ overflows from more than Witt. I do know that Christ made me for the exact same purpose too. I have known that I am to bring Him glory in all things and I have learned to say, “NEVERTHELESS…NEVERTHELESS, I will praise YOU. You alone are worthy of all honor and glory no matter the circumstances!” I have learned that something that many would say is horrible is one of the greatest blessings in my life. I have most definitely learned to bow down at the throne of Grace and wholeheartedly thank God for Witt…thank Him for Witt just the way he is…perfectly made in the image of Christ! Perfectly made to bring God infinite glory!

APPOINTMENT WITH DR. MACICEK TODAY!

Witt has a cardiology checkup this afternoon. He seems to be feeling really well! Witt's feed has also been changed so they will check his electrolytes today. Other than that Mel is preparing for Witt's 2 year birthday!!!! I just want to shout "Hallelujah"!!!!!!

Melanie sent this video yesterday to GrandBud(Witt's great grandfather!) who had a procedure done yesterday. Of course GrandBud loved it!!

AMAZING GOD!

What an amazing God...what an amazing 8 days at Warrenton!!! At the top of the list is that Witt and Mel were there for the entire show(except for part of the day Monday) and Austan joined them for the weekends. Melanie and Austan both jumped back in at the cafe with Melanie making plates and Austan grilling. God's blessings on my family certainly flowed and one of them was from Rachel Ashwell.

Rachel Ashwell(Shabby Chic) was on our property doing a book signing in the Junk Gypsy tent. She took time out to come inside and meet Witt. I told her all about Witt, explained his equipment and mentioned that we were wanting to raise money to buy a van or car that Witt's cart and equipment could just roll into. Later that day Melanie was presented with a book that Rachel had signed for both of us. It read:

To Witt's Nana and Mama, Your story touched my heart. You are a beautiful,

strong little soul, surrounded by love that you so deserve. Please accept this

token towards the vehicle that will help show you the world.

WITT'S AT WARRENTON!!

I am sitting here in Warrenton at the Zapp Hall Antique show watching Witt!! He's been here a couple of days. Mel and Austan actually took him to Houston earlier today to the pediatrician. They just wanted the doctor to examine Witt again since he is still pretty junky. This is the first respiratory type illness Witt has had since he's been on the vent and so far he is handling it pretty well! The doctor said that Witt has a good bit of congestion but the xray showed no pneumonia or wetness in his lungs!!!

This next part absolutely brings tear of joy to me...the doctor that saw Witt today was on the NICU team when Witt was born. She said that Witt has grown so much and that honestly they didn't expect Witt to live. That's why we leave all our expectations at God's throne. Somehow God trades our expectations for His peace and He alone has the final say on all things!

The doctors trip wore Witt out!

It was a good visit to the pediatrician's office. Dr. Tapia is on vacation so Witt was seen by someone else. Fortunately she had seen Witt in the hospital. She said Witt actually looks and sounds pretty good. He hadn't had a fever since this morning and Melanie has not had to turn up his oxygen. Witt's runny nose and cough could be allergy related or viral. He was given a breathing treatment and is on steroids for 5 days. They also did a quick strep test which was negative. The visit ended with Witt getting his flu shot! Melanie did ask about taking Witt out of town to the antique show. The doctor said that it should be no problem for him to go assuming he is getting better. Melanie won't make any decisions till tomorrow and may still wait a day or two just to make sure Witt is not getting worse. She is also keeping a close eye on his breathing. He seems to be breathing a little differently. If anyone would notice a slight change Melanie would. Honestly, we are grateful that this doctor's visit did not end up with Witt having to be admitted...we got kind of use to that happening! Please pray that he is getting better and that his breathing returns to normal!!

Today I was reminded how often our circumstances can disappoint us but that my God can never disappoint. My hope and my joy must be found in Him and not in the plans I make. Having said that, I am still praying that Mel, Austan and Witt can join the rest of the family at the antique show and I am trusting God no matter what His answer is!!!

Please pray for Witt! Yesterday he woke up with a runny nose and a cough. Melanie talked to the nurse at the pediatrician's office and made an appointment for today at one. The nurse said it sounded like allergies but wanted Witt looked at. In the middle of the night Witt started running a low grade fever. Fortunately we have not had to take Witt to the ER. Please, please pray for Witt that this doesn't get any worse and hurt his lungs!! A respiratory illness could be very dangerous for Witt. Please pray for the rest of us too!!! Of course Witt's health is by far the main concern but tomorrow Mel, Austan and Witt were suppose to come join us at Warrenton for the antique show. I am heading back to Houston right now to drive them to the doctor. Melanie has not been able to be a part of the Zapp Hall event for a couple of years and is really looking forward to this. Our main concern is always Witt's health and especially where anything respiratory could be involved!! Right now I am asking God to let no other emotion fill me but adoration for Him. I am asking that His praises are what fill my heart. I know that sounds very noble but that's best for me. What a God....what is best for Him is most assuredly best for me too!!!

I think Witt has had enough!!

Although we did take Witt to the hospital he did not get to have the swallow study. In order to perform the test Witt's cuff in the trach has to be deflated. This really upsets him. He gags quite a bit and cries...and Witt never cries!! Melanie got him all ready but he was too upset to even try to swallow anything. The occupational therapist recommended that Mel deflate the cuff at home for very short periods of time to help Witt to tolerate it! Next up is an appointment Monday afternoon with the gastro doctor. Hopefully he will have some insight and suggestions to help with Witt's slow motility!

Witt has a swallow study tomorrow at 10:30. He is having it done to check his swallow function with his trach. Please pray he will want to eat, that there will be no gaging, and he will swallow with no aspirations. Witt turned 22 months. He will be 2 before I know it.

- He's weighing in at 27 lbs and is 30 inches long

- wears 18 or 24 months clothes

- Our tooth count is 10 with 2 more on the way

- He no longer is sleeping in his pack and play, he was way to big for it. He sleeps in a toddler bed in our room for now.

- He has been having psychical therapy once a week and just was evaluated by an occupational therapist. She will be coming to the house twice a week.

- He is getting much stronger and although he can't sit up on his own yet he loves to be in the sitting position. He DOES NOT like to lay back when you are holding him.

- He sleeps about 12 hours almost every night and takes 1 to 2 naps a day.

- He loves to taste different foods but we still don't feed him much by mouth. Hopefully after working with the OT he will be able to try more food.

- He loves to play with blankets and is now very aware he has clothes on. He pulls on his pants and shirts most of the day.

Witt had a very good checkup with Dr. Macicek! He wants Melanie to wean Witt's oxygen as low as possible keeping Witt's saturation about 95. Melanie has started this process but it will take a couple of weeks. Dr. Macicek doesn't want to try to wean Witt off the ventilator at all for now. The ventilator is actually therapy for Witt and one of the last options that helps with his cardiac issues by helping his lungs to expand. Dr. Macicek strongly encouraged Mel to live life with Witt. There was even some talk of taking a trip or two with Witt in the future!! Taking Witt out and traveling will be so much easier when they are able to have a vehicle that Witt's cart just rolls into. I know our God who has been and is Faithful has a plan for this too!!!

Last night Witt was able to go to Kelsey's(cousin's) birthday party. Graham(cousin) was really glad to see Witt and his toys!!

Witt has been doing very well! His stomach continues to be an issue. Melanie has been trying all sorts of adjustments to his feeds to see if anything helps. Dr. Tapia is referring Witt to a motility specialist. It appears to take him a long time to actually digest the food. Friday is physical therapy and this past Friday Witt rode his rocking horse! Witt is definitely gaining much more strength in his neck and back. He even pulls himself up to sitting when Mel is holding him. Melanie and I have both noticed that Witt is trying to make some sounds. He actually can't because of the trach but he sure looks like he is trying!

Thank you all, for your continued support and prayers. Sometimes I forget all the physical problems that Witt has. The ventilator and oxygen are just a part of his life and his heart and brain, well I cant see their irregularities. Every now and then God gently reminds me of these things but not so I will hurt for Witt, Mel and Austan. When God reminds me, it is to remind me how incredible He is...how dependent Witt's life is on God...how dependent my life is on God. I am sorry to say that I still need the reminders especially when Witt is home and thriving. Please continue to pray....pray that I will never take a day in Witt's life, my life or any life for granted but use each day to bring Him glory whether at home or in a hospital!!!

Witt had a busy day yesterday. First an appointment with the pediatrician(Dr. Tapia) at

Texas Children's then lunch at Santo's. He was very patient waiting for

me and Mel to load the car and his equipment!

It's a good thing Witt had his shades because

it was very bright outside!!

It was a great appointment with Dr. Tapia. Witt basically weighed the same as he did two weeks ago before he got really sick and had to be admitted to the hospital. Dr. Tapia is scheduling another swallow test to see if Witt can eat some food by mouth. He has started to really show interest when Mel and Austan are eating. Dr. Tapia is also scheduling some sort of oxygen requirement test. This will accurately measure much oxygen Witt requires. Witt also was given 3 shots!!! This did bring him completely up to date on his vaccinations! Doctor's appointment and then lunch. Witt was tired...very very tired!

Witt is home! This was a very short stay in comparison to the last 2 that were 4 months each. We are incredibly blessed and grateful that the Adenovirus did not affect his heart or lungs. Witt has a follow-up appointment this Thursday with Dr. Tapia(pediatrician) and will reschedule the appointment he missed with Dr. Macicek. Right now Witt is resting well at home. Maybe a little to well in the early evening. His nights and days are a tiny bit mixed up!! Thank you, for all the prayers, please join us in our praises!!!

Witt turned 21 months old Friday and there is talk of Witt going home tomorrow!!! Friday he started feeling much better. Friday night was the first night that he slept all the way through(11 hours!) like he does most nights at home and Melanie didn't have to change diapers and bedding. By Friday night Witt's feeds were to his normal fluid amount and his normal schedule of 4 feeds a day. Through most of the hospital stay he had been on 2 times his normal fluid amount and no diuretics to fight the dehydration! Yesterday the doctors started Witt back on his home regimen of diuretics and his feeds were changed to 3/4 formula and 1/4 water. All of his lab work looked really good. Today he will be fed is normal formula mixture. All the final steps have been taken so that Witt can hopefully go home tomorrow!!

Witt is definitely doing better. Melanie is changing a little fewer diapers with less volume! We still do not have results from the IgG test. Witt looks like he is getting back to his normal fluid level. His little eyes sink in when he is dehydrated but now his face is filled out nicely. He is still getting more than his maintenance amount of formula and water all(formula and water) through his gtube. He is waking up happier and smiling more...of course he always smiles at Mel and Austan!

There has not been any talk of going home yet. Witt needs to back on his home regiment of feeds and medicine. Right now they are slowly reducing his overall liquid intake but still making sure he is hydrated. Witt has now been in the hospital 8 days and it has passed quickly. We certainly desire God's timing in all this...I'm simply asking for His timing to go home to be soon!!!!

Witt and Elmo had a long night!

Witt continues to have frequent, very loose stools. Right now he is being fed formula and pedialyte through his gtube...the formula for some calories and the pedialyte for more fluid. The total amount is one and a half maintenance but that is constantly changing as blood test results come in. Witt is also receiving fluid by IV. The doctors are doing a wonderful job of keeping Witt hydrated and yet not overloaded. Yesterday the attending also ordered an IgG test. The best I understand is that this has to do with Witt's immunoglobulin(Ig) or antibodies present in his blood. Witt is on day 9 of this adenovirus with no real improvement. One thing that might be happening is that he just isn't producing enough Ig to fight this off. If this level is low he can actually be given Ig by IV(wow...buy a vowel!). Melanie and all the doctors are keeping a very close eye on how Witt looks and his oxygen saturation levels. They want to be sure he doesn't begin to look puffy and require more oxygen which would be a good indication that he has too much fluids.

Recently Jim and I have changed some plans because of Witt's hospital stay. It might have been easy to get upset over these changes but we have a great example in Austan and Melanie. We have watched as their plans have been turned upside-down and yet they are called to still make plans on a daily basis and even plans for the future all the while knowing they may or may not come to pass. We have watched Melanie and Austan live out the plans that God has for them. We have watched them walk in very detailed steps that are far different than they planned in their minds and yet there is joy! When our plans are changed there can be great disappointment or peace and joy. We can choose to hang on to our plans and most assuredly find disappointment or let go, trust the Lord and most assuredly find Him, His peace, His joy!

Please pray that Witt will begin to get over this virus. Please pray for God's wisdom in treating him and keeping the right balance of fluids. And please pray that Mel, Austan and all of us continue to simply seek the Lord and His direction and that in His steps we find Him!!!

ADENOVIRUS

Witt has tested positive for the adenovirus. This type of virus affects the respiratory, eyes, intestines and urinary tracts and its consistent to what Witt's symptoms have been over the last 8 days. During the last hospital stay Witt tested positive for this same virus. Typically, this virus runs its course from 10-14 days. Please pray as Melanie and Karen have to wake up through the night and early morning to change diapers and bedding for Witt. This type of virus can cause severe dehydration in infants as he is now experiencing. In addition, his oxygen saturation level has fallen by a couple of percentages as well. Pray as we depend on God's healing hands to guide the doctors, nurses and Melanie throughout the next few days.

TRYING LESS FORMULA

Yesterday, Witt was given half formula and half pedialyte again. Unfortunately, he's just not able to tolerate it yet. He had several really loose dirty diapers through the night. His lab work at 5am showed his sodium was slightly up...headed back in the wrong direction. At rounds the attending decided to try 1/4 formula and 3/4 pedialyte and increase the overall amount of pedialyte. The thought is that nothing is really going on except that Witt's system just isn't ready for much formula. So far all the tests to try to determine what caused this have come back negative. There is a very good chance we will never know what caused it. Witt will just get well and go home!!!!

Yesterday Witt seemed to be doing much better. There was even talk of going home by Sunday but that's changed for now. He wasn't able to tolerate any of his formula and has had to go back to straight pedialyte. Mel even asked for the pedialyte to be increased slightly because Witt appeared to be getting dehydrated. We are not sure exactly what is going on. It might be that Witt just needs more time and the the formula added in more slowly than half and half. The doctor has ordered a test to check the bacteria in Witt's stomach. They honestly don't expect that to show anything but need to rule somethings out. Melanie has changed his clothes and bed several times this morning. At least we don't have to wash the bedding!!

Although the reason Witt is in the hospital does not appear to be serious it's always hard. It's harder for Melanie to take care of Witt here and everyone is definitely a little sleep deprived. Please pray that through all this we seek and accept God's perfect timing to His glory!!!

FEELING BETTER!

Witt is feeling much better! His latest blood test showed everything is going in the right direction. His sugar level is low so he is getting dextrose. AND so far Witt is not holding extra fluid!! The attending who has seen Witt before(I think they all have!) said that Witt looks really good. Today's plan is to start feeding him a mixture of formula and pedialyte. Later today he will be given some of his normal medications with the goal of getting him back on his home meds. We have been catching up with old friends from the hospital...they have been stopping by to see Mel and Witt. We even ran into Chase and his mom, Carol! Chase is the young man who had the lung transplant and we have had the blessing of getting to know his family. The doctors are hoping this is a very short stay. Its funny to watch them say that with a little cringing. The last 2 hospital stays(for very different reasons) were each 4 months. We know that God is in control and has numbered all our days...even these days in the hospital!!!

Witt had to be admitted to Texas Children's today. Hopefully this will be a short stay! The blood test showed that he is very acidotic. This isn't necessarily surprising since Witt has had diarrhea for several days. Mel had made changes at home with his feeds and diuretics trying to keep him plenty hydrated. It's really hard to know how much extra fluid to give Witt and what diuretic to hold. The pediatrician said its a little strange that some other levels are not out of whack too. They will run some more tests but he said most likely Witt will get better without us ever knowing what's caused it all. It's such a blessing to have the pediatrician at Texas Children's. He walked over to the hospital to make sure the doctors in the PCU understand that Witt cannot be hydrated too quickly or he will be overloaded with fluid which affects his heart and lungs. We were able to wait in the room at the pediatrician until a hospital room was ready. Witt used the time wisely to nap!

The Kangaroo Crew came to the pediatrician's office and got an IV in on the first try!!!

The wait was not very long before Witt's room was ready and Witt was all settled in.

The plan right now is to give Witt half his fluids by the gtube and half through the IV. Hopefully this will hydrate him but not overload him! Please pray that this is a short stay! Also, pray that God is able to use this time in the hospital to His glory...He is so Faithful!!!

We have been praying prayers of thanksgiving for three months at home and healthy days there!

We thank you for joining us in prayer on those days and on days like today as well.

Witt has had diarrhea for a few days. It hasn't been horrible, but because sweet Witt's fluids are such a delicate balance he is being taken to Texas Children's for blood tests to check his electrolyte levels. The pediatrician there will check him after the tests as well.

Again, thank you for your constant love and prayers for wonderful Witt!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MELANIE!

Today I am actually writing about Witt's mom and not so much Witt. Today is Melanie's 25th birthday!!!! I would like to share some stories with you about Melanie. They are stories that I love to remember because they are wonderful reminders of God's plan for Melanie's life even before she was born! I could not fully relate to what Melanie must of been feeling after the 5 month ultrasound with Witt but I know God could give her peace, a peace even without assurances. 25 years and close to 9 months ago I was out jogging in our little neighborhood. This is a neighborhood where kids ride their bikes and frequently play in the streets...no sidewalks. It was a beautiful day. As I jogged down one street I could hear that a car was coming very close. I reached back with my hand just as the car hit me and threw me in the air. I landed on my back and head and then skidded on the road. The young driver was looking for an address and never saw me. My head was split open and my back had 3rd degree burns form sliding on the pavement. But there are so many things that miraculously didn't happen...I didn't actually get run over by the car but was thrown up in the air, I didn't have any broken bones, I didn't have a concussion, I didn't loose consciousness!!! What I did find out a couple of weeks later and totally unbeknown to me was that I was actually pregnant with Melanie at the time. Not only had I been hit by a car, but in the hospital I was x-rayed from head to toe looking for injuries. My first thought was if the baby survived the accident I must have fried it with the x-rays!!! God gave me such a peace and yet it wasn't necessarily assurances that Mel was okay but that God was in control! That was Melanie's incredible God ordained beginning. My life has never been the same. Melanie has always had a very very tender soft heart that's protected by a very thin but tough shell. She has always been drawn to the "underdogs". When Mel was in preK at First Baptist she would always tell me about her friend she loved to play with. She would tell me all they did each week but she never brought up one detail that I didn't discover for quite sometime. Her little girl friend was actually in a wheel chair. That detail was not important to Melanie. She actually loved that the little girl had her own desk that went with them everywhere!! That is an incredible mindset that God gave Melanie that has served Witt well! Around that same age I also got many glimpses of Mel's straightforward, speak the truth mindset. This is one of my favorite stories that I do tell often but it is who Mel is even today. We were at my parents and the kids were acting up some so I sent them back to the bedroom. I walked back there and said, "When you kids act like this I don't even want to see you" to which Mel quickly answered, "Then why did you come back here?" Honestly, it was not said with disrespect it was an honest question and she wasn't afraid to ask it! I of course said, "I don't know and I'm leaving!!!" I'll bet some doctors at Texas Children's can relate to this.?!! Melanie was in elementary school when she left me this note. I certainly loved the fact that she missed me but what really touched me was what she wrote at the end. God's hand has always always been evident in and through her!!!

That little girl grew into the only person(by God's plan) capable of being Witt's mom. Oh, Melanie, the wonderful woman you have grown into...the undeniable gift from God you are to me and now to Witt. God "protected" His plans for you and equipped you to walk in them...don't ever doubt that! Your first 25 years have blessed me beyond measure. Happy Birthday...I love you!~mom

FIRST HEART SURGERY

One year ago today I placed Witt in the arms of a nurse and they took him back for his first open heart surgery. I remember not being able to fall asleep the night before, I was so worried. I had so many thoughts racing through my mind and I thought my world was over. God gave me a peace the next morning that only God can do. Witt did great through surgery and his recovery was slow with a few set backs along the way but he did better then everyone thought he would. I cant believe how far he has come and how our lives have changed since that first heart surgery. He is truly a miracle. Each time I change his clothes or bath him and I see his scars and i'm reminded what a gift his life is. Today has been much different then last year at this time. We slept in, took naps, cleaned house, and all the normal things a family does. Today I celebrate Witt's life one year later on a day we thought we may not have him anymore. Praise God!!!

Austan, Melanie and Witt spent July 4th with us at Warrenton! It had been quite some time since they have been anywhere except the nursing home trip. I know it is hard to take Witt and all his medical supplies out for doctors appointments much less for overnight stays and I am very very grateful to Austan and Melanie for doing this. Not only does all the family miss seeing Witt but we also miss Austan and Melanie. When Witt was born my relationship to Mel was forever changed. Honestly, God has used Witt to bind Mel and me in so many wonderful ways. However, a few of the things I have always been blessed to share with Mel have not been possible so when Austan, Melanie and Witt came to Warrenton for the weekend it was wonderful!! Thank you Mel and Austan for doing what it takes(and it takes a lot!) to spend a couple of days away from your home. Mel, Austan and Witt...God uses you as medicine for my soul!!!

NURSING HOME FUN!

Well our trip to the nursing home was very interesting to say the least. We checked in at 2:30 on friday, signed a ton a paper work and then headed back to the hotel till 8:30 that evening. When we got back to the home a nurse let us in our room and that was the last we saw of anyone till we left. We did have one visitor come by though. It was around 10 and we keep hearing a knocking on our door but we weren't totally sure. Finally I got out of bed to check and sure enough there was a little old man going up and down the halls in his wheelchair knocking on all the doors. He was so sweet. We saw him the next morning trying to get out of the front door. Austan and I woke up around 6am and went and met my parents and Lynn at Ihop before they headed to Winter Park. Although the nursing home stay was very silly i'm glad we are able to get Witt on medicaid. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of Austan and me when it comes to Witt's future bills. All in all it was a fun trip! We had to pack what seemed like a months worth of luggage for two days but I enjoyed getting Witt out of the house. It's also nice to know that it is possible to take him places. Thank you for all your prayers for safe travels. If you would please pray for my mom, Lynn and Cheryl's family they will be driving back from Winter park tomorrow and Friday.

As for other news with Witt there isnt much to report. I took Witt to the pedi surgery nurse yesterday to get his g-button looked at because it keeps leaking. She was able to put in a new size so we are hoping that will fix the problem. He goes back to the cardiologist in July and his special needs doctor in August. We will also be starting back up his physical therapy soon. Here are a few pics from the weekend. I have pictures of our nursing home room but those are stuck on my camera. I will post them another time. I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th!!

ROAD TRIP!!!

Yesterday was Witt's first real car trip! Tonight Witt will stay in a nursing home near Killeen, Tx. This is the last step in Witt qualifying for a special medicaid program. I went along to lend a hand if needed. To make the trip a little fun and just in case there were any issues we went a day early and stayed in a hotel close by.

One of the harder things about the trip is the packing. Thankfully all of Witt's equipment is portable but there is quite a bit. Another issue is lifting Witt in and out of his car seat while maneuvering his tubes, oxygen and ventilator! This is probably the biggest need for the family right now...a vehicle where Witt's cart can simply be rolled in and locked down. His cart is also a car seat and if he could just be rolled in that would be wonderful. I have talked to some people about raising money for this and now I am praying and trusting in God to accomplish it!! Witt was a great traveler. Hopefully, staying in the hotel was a treat for Mel and Austan...it sure was for me!

The pack and play provided by the hotel doesn't work for Witt because of the tubes but a good old fashioned pallet does!

This afternoon its off to the nursing home to check in. Then back to the hotel because Witt, Mel and Austan don't have to actually be in the room for the night until 9pm. Please pray that the night is not too hard! Pray that God uses Witt, Mel and Austan in this setting to bring glory to His name!!!

Jim and I had the blessing of joining the Luphers for their Father's Day dinner out. Mark Lupher is a wonderful father who clearly loves his sons and grandchildren!

Undoubtedly, Austan loves Witt and Witt loves his daddy! Austan has been called to be a father in ways that most of us cannot even imagine. He has had to have discussions with doctors and make decisions about his child's life that most dads will never have to. Cheryl and I have said this before...Austan is one of our heroes!

Witt's week started with his cardiology check up which went very well. He did not have an echo this time and the blood work came back great. Outings with Witt are definitely different than with other kids but like other kids Witt...

...enjoys the ride...

...loves to be with his mommy...

...and is worn out by the whole thing!!!

It's been a wonderful normal week for Witt...thank You, Lord! Witt's normal may not be what's normal for most but its great to have normal days!!!! Please pray that we continue to love the Lord, our God with all our heart, souls, minds and strength with the same intensity in these normal days as we have when Witt was in the hospital!! Please pray that we set the Lord continually before us in these normal days not because there is some great request but because we want to worship and praise Him always!!! What an amazing God that He can take our minds, our very meaning of words like "normal" and transform them when His will is not to transform our circumstances. I see this in Mel and Austan all the time...AMAZING GOD!!!!

"HI" FROM WITT!!!!

Witt's had a fun and healthy week! He has been feeling really well. Today he is at the cardiologist for his check-up. So far we know that Witt's blood work has come back good...all the levels are where they should be. Dr. Macicek was so kind to call Melanie this morning and let her know he couldn't be there today. "Dr. Ivory"(I won't even attempt to spell his last name!) is seeing Witt this time. He was Witt's doctor for a month this past summer and is wonderful! This week Witt was a part of family dinners on both sides of the family. One was a great outing to Santo's restaurant with the Luphers and the McCords gathered at Witt's house.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of staying with Witt while Melanie and Austan had a rare movie date! Witt was in such a great mood until of course I started videoing him!! He makes me laugh even more when he gets so serious when I point my iphone at him.

After tolerating this grandmom's filming it was rest time! No matter Witt is doing he just melts my heart and keeps it tender to God!

All your prayers are still very much appreciated! We are so grateful for each day with Witt and each week and each month as the days add up!!! Please continue to pray for Witt's health...specifically his heart and lungs. Please pray that as God continues to pour out His infinite grace that Melanie and Austan continue to accept it. They are simply amazing! And as always pray that in everything...in every detail that the name of Christ is magnified!

A NIGHT AT MY HOUSE!

Witt has been doing quite well the last few days! Melanie has started giving

him baby food. It's a good way to increase his calories. Unfortunately

(or maybe fortunately!) it is through his feeding tube so he doesn't

taste the new delicacies!! The only problem in the

Lupher household is the air conditioner in their

house or maybe its just the record heat wave we

are having! Last night they had to turn

the AC off and drive around for a

couple of hours. Witt, however,

loves a car ride!

When they turned the AC back on it didn't seem to be working any better.
Melanie and Austan loaded Witt up and spent the night with us. Now,

I am sorry that the AC isn't working great but this is what I got

to see first thing this morning....

He really is a happy camper!
